Work From Home Must Do's
The greatest advantages for someone with the ability to work from home, are the lack of a commute, the flexibility of schedule, and for a business owner, the elimination of an office lease. However, while the aforementioned advantages are solid, every home office presents the challenge of separating home life, from work life. If you can recognize this challenge in advance, you will be able to take it on with success. Below, I will outline some specific areas of advice.
For starters, make sure that you engage in a business which is amenable to a home office. If goes without saying that not every business is suitable to a home environment. For instance, a business which requires that customers physically visit the home office, will severly cloud the home life, work life distinction.
Furthermore, treat your home office just as you would any office. What this means, is that you need to be professional at your home office, just as you would be in an office outside of the home. This means having a phone and voicemail system set up, keeping regular business hours, being organized, and absolutely no dogs barking, or children crying in the background, when on a phone call.
Also, make sure that your work space is in an optimal location in the house. This will greater enable your ability to remain professional. Do not create a series of satellite offices within you home. Rather, find the ideal location, and drop your anchor (figuratively speaking). Locate an area in your home which can be dedicated to running a business. Ideally, this will be a quiet, private location, away from street noise, and other potential distractions. Organize this space with the necessary equipment and furniture to operate your business comfortably.
While taking care of your end of the bargain is one thing, you must make sure that you give others in your circle the same opportunity. Hence, you can minimize your distractions and interruptions by informing friends and family of your home office arrangement in the beginning stages of your business. Make it clear to your friends and family what your business hours are, and that during those hours you work from home, unless informed otherwise. This will cut down on the distractions of friends calling or dropping by during your business hours. It will also give your family an understanding of your limited availability during office hours, and aid them in keeping distractions from reaching your office.
Once your home office is situated to your complete satisfaction, it is time for the day-to-day operation of your buisness. Make sure that you plan your work, and work your plan. Since you are your own boss, hold yourself accountable by creating a daily "To-Do-List", and completing those tasks. If there are any unfinished tasks, make sure that you put them on the top of the list for the following day. However, you should only construct your To-Do-List with a realistic ability to complete the set of tasks each day.
Gauge your performance by initially setting goals. By setting goals, you will not only keep yourself on track, but you will also have a barometer upon which to track your success. You should set both short and long-term realistic goals, which provide measurable results.
Nonetheless, you should always maintain a balance between life, and work life. Do not let work life dominate or encompass your everyday life. Try and keep your work life and everyday life as seperate as possible. I know this may be difficult, but this is one ot the things which you need to think of in the early stage of setting up your home office. For instance, make sure that you keep your home office in a section of the house which does not need to be occupied for purposes other than work. Commit yourself to a clock out time, and stick to it, unless an absolute emergency arises.
Once your business grows to a point where you able to do so, dedicate a portion of your profits towards outsourcing some of your tasks. This will allow your business to run more efficiently, and give you a better balance between work life, and everyday life.
If you follow the work from home must do's, you should have very nice success with your home office.
